Mustang carried a 15-point lead into the fourth quarter, but Yukon rallied for a 36-35 win at Miller Stadium on Friday, Sept. 4, blocking the Broncos' field-goal attempt on the final play.
Jonathon Haxton's 42-yard field goal put the Millers ahead with 2:04 remaining. Mustang drove back into scoring range, but Yukon blocked Harrison Daniels' 41-yard attempt to finish a fourth quarter in which the Millers outscored the Broncos 16-0.
The finish spoiled a big night for Mustang's passing game. Kason Delgado threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns, with Obama Bell catching five passes for 210 yards and two scores, according to the MHSBroncoSports.TV broadcast's final statistics.
The teams traded touchdowns in the opening quarter. Yukon quarterback Zealand Danielson scored on a short keeper, and Delgado answered with a touchdown pass to Bell just 32 seconds into Mustang's first possession.
Santos Archangel's 13-yard touchdown run gave Mustang a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter. Danielson scored again just before halftime to tie the game at 14.
Mustang pulled away with three touchdowns in the third quarter. On the first play after halftime, Delgado connected with Bell for a 61-yard score. Delgado later found Gabriel Osborne Jr. for a 44-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 28-14.
Yukon answered with Danielson's touchdown pass to Zayden Khalil, but a missed extra point left Mustang ahead 28-20. Bell then turned a short completion into a 59-yard gain to set up a Delgado touchdown run. The Broncos entered the final period leading 35-20.
Danielson began Yukon's comeback with another touchdown keeper. After Mustang's next possession stalled, Prince Shelburn scored with 5:21 remaining to bring the Millers within two points.
Mustang defensive back Aboss Deason stopped Daniel Yebit at the goal line on the two-point attempt, preserving a 35-33 lead. Yukon recovered the ensuing onside kick, however, and drove into position for Haxton's go-ahead field goal.
The Broncos had one more opportunity. Bell made a contested catch on third-and-long to move Mustang into Yukon territory, and a defensive offsides penalty helped the Broncos reach field-goal range.
With 4.8 seconds left, Mustang lined up for Daniels' attempt. Yukon blocked the kick, and an initial flag was waved off after the defender touched the football, ending the game.
Mustang finished with 412 total yards, including 71 rushing yards, according to the broadcast's postgame statistics. Delgado completed 12 of 22 passes without an interception and added 35 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Osborne caught two passes for 54 yards and a score. The Broncos were penalized 12 times for 100 yards.
The loss ended Mustang's eight-game winning streak against Yukon.
