Freshman Ethan Truss rushed for 203 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown as Mustang defeated Edmond Memorial 36-22 on Friday, Oct. 23, at Bronco Stadium.

The Broncos overcame a 22-19 second-quarter deficit, scored the game's final 17 points and held the Bulldogs scoreless after halftime. Mustang improved to 5-3.

Truss finished with 203 yards on 17 carries. The Broncos totaled 446 yards of offense — 296 rushing and 150 passing — while holding Memorial to 214 total yards and 30 yards on the ground.

Broncos answer an early touchdown

Edmond Memorial struck on its first offensive play after forcing a Mustang punt. Quarterback Talon Wilkerson found Cameron Quarrels on a short pass, and Quarrels turned it into a 65-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead.

Mustang answered with a drive extended by a roughing-the-passer penalty. Dajuan Woody powered through the middle for a touchdown, and Harrison Daniels' extra point tied the game.

The Broncos' kickoff coverage then pinned Memorial deep in its own territory. Pressure on the Bulldogs' next offensive play forced a throw from the end zone, and an intentional-grounding call gave Mustang a safety and a 9-7 lead.

Daniels added a 32-yard field goal, putting the Broncos ahead 12-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Truss helps Mustang regain the lead

Kolo Ngalo supplied a defensive touchdown early in the second quarter, gathering a loose ball after a Memorial pass to the outside and returning it to the end zone. Daniels' extra point extended the lead to 19-7.

The Bulldogs responded quickly. A Mustang penalty during a punt sequence allowed Memorial to keep possession, and a long touchdown pass followed by a two-point conversion trimmed the margin to 19-15.

On Mustang's next offensive play, Tommalik Benson intercepted an outside throw and returned it for a touchdown. The extra point put Memorial ahead 22-19.

A long Truss run helped the Broncos threaten again, but a lost fumble ended the drive. Mustang's defense forced a punt, giving the offense another chance.

This time, the Broncos finished. A pass-interference penalty and an Isaac Woodard reception helped move Mustang out of its own territory before Truss cut through the middle and broke free for a touchdown. Daniels' extra point restored the lead at 26-22, a margin Mustang carried into halftime.

Bell extends the advantage

Gabriel Dixon's third-down tackle for loss helped force a Memorial punt to open the second half.

Mustang capitalized on its next possession. On third-and-six, Kason Delgado found Obama Bell open down the sideline. Bell caught the pass, stiff-armed a defender and reached the end zone. Daniels' extra point made it 33-22 with 7:25 left in the third quarter.

Play stopped later in the quarter while Wilkerson received treatment for an injury and was taken off the field. Ace Long replaced him at quarterback. The broadcast did not establish a diagnosis or medical outcome.

Long helped Memorial move into Mustang territory after play resumed, but the Broncos' defense held. Backfield stops pushed the Bulldogs into a long-yardage situation, and Mustang stopped them on fourth down early in the final quarter.

Defense protects the lead

The Broncos put together a clock-consuming fourth-quarter drive behind Truss, Woody and a third-down keeper by Delgado. Daniels finished the possession with his second field goal, extending the lead to 36-22.

Quarrels returned the ensuing kickoff into Mustang territory before Tate Homer brought him down. Memorial advanced on its final possession, but Mustang forced several incompletions and ended the threat with a fourth-down sack. Pressure from Maddox Gregg forced Long toward Tucker Harris, who brought him down.

Mustang took over with 36 seconds remaining and ran out the clock.

Truss was named the broadcast's player of the game. Daniels finished with two field goals and four extra points, while the Broncos scored touchdowns on two runs, a pass and a defensive return.

Mustang next travels to Norman North for a 7 p.m. game Friday, Oct. 30.
