Mustang took the opening set and threatened to force a deciding fifth, but Moore held off the Broncos for a 3–1 volleyball win Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the Mustang High School Event Center.

The Broncos won the first set 26–24 before the Lions answered with wins of 25–13, 25–22 and 25–23. Mustang led 22–21 late in the fourth set and tied it again at 23, but Moore scored the final two points to close out the Senior Night match.

Broncos take the opener

Mustang turned a 6–6 tie into an 11–6 lead with five consecutive points, including attacking contributions from Hazel Harrop and a point at the net from Zoe Schlegel.

Moore rallied to tie the set at 17. Mustang responded, with Anna Waitman's attack helping build a 22–19 lead, but the Lions pushed back again. After Moore tied it at 24, the Broncos won the next two points to take the set.

The second set began with another strong Mustang start. The Broncos led 5–0 before Moore recovered and pulled away for a 25–13 win to even the match.

Mustang kept the third set close, tying it at 21 on a Schlegel attack. Moore went ahead 23–21, then finished the set 25–22 after Mustang briefly cut the deficit to one.

Fourth-set comeback comes up short

Needing a win to extend the match, Mustang built a 12–8 fourth-set lead behind contributions at the net from Waitman and Schlegel and attacking points from Paislee Wilson, Harrop and Ava Reynolds.

Moore erased that advantage, but the Broncos fought back. After ties at 20 and 21, Kobie Yandell finished an attack to put Mustang ahead 22–21 and send the Lions into a timeout.

Moore answered with two straight points. Mustang tied it at 23 following a ruling against the Lions, but could not force a fifth set.

Postgame statistics credited Mustang with a 35–34 edge in kills and a 17–11 advantage in blocks. Moore held a 13–4 advantage in service aces.

Seven seniors recognized

Senior Night honored Waitman, Brecken Smiley, Zoe Christy, Ryan McIntyre, Reynolds, Wilson and Schlegel. All seven were featured in the pregame starting-lineup presentation.

The senior class also received collective players-of-the-game recognition.
