Freshman Ethan Truss rushed for 243 yards and two touchdowns, and Jayden Reyes scored three different ways as Mustang rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat Norman North 49-21 on Friday, Oct. 30, in Norman.
The Broncos scored 35 consecutive points after falling behind 14-0, turning a difficult opening quarter into a road victory that improved their record to 6-3.
Truss finished with 24 carries. Reyes scored on a run, a 40-yard reception and a 78-yard kickoff return. Obama Bell added four catches for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Reyes brings the Broncos back
Norman North scored on its first two possessions. Quarterback Nash Henry worked the short passing game on the opening drive before finding tight end Ben Kolar for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
After a Mustang punt, Byron Mason broke loose on a long touchdown run. The Timberwolves led 14-0 with 1:34 left in the first quarter, while penalties repeatedly pushed the Broncos backward.
Mustang's defense began to settle in, forcing punts and giving the offense opportunities to recover. A promising second-quarter drive ended with Harrison Daniels' 50-yard field-goal attempt missing left, but the Broncos broke through on their next possession.
A juggling Bell reception moved Mustang inside the 20-yard line, and Reyes finished the drive with a touchdown run through the middle. The extra point cut the deficit to 14-7 with just under four minutes left in the half.
Another defensive stop gave Mustang the ball with 2:16 remaining. The Broncos moved into Norman North territory before Kason Delgado threw down the sideline toward Bell.
Bell went down on the play, but Reyes was there to make the catch and finish the 40-yard touchdown. The extra point tied the game at 14 with 32 seconds left, a score that held through halftime.
Kickoff return puts Mustang ahead
Reyes needed just 11 seconds of the second half to give Mustang its first lead.
He fielded the opening kickoff, accelerated up the sideline and beat the remaining pursuit for a touchdown. The broadcast credited the return as 78 yards. The extra point put the Broncos ahead 21-14.
Mustang forced another punt and extended the lead on its next possession. Truss supplied yards on the ground, and a third-down completion to Jonathan McCorvey kept the drive moving.
On another third down, Delgado found Bell on the outside. Bell escaped along the sideline for a touchdown, and the extra point made it 28-14 with 7:30 left in the third quarter.
Norman North drove into goal-to-go territory on its next possession, but the Broncos held. Justin Wilson came off the edge on fourth-and-goal and sacked Henry, protecting Mustang's two-touchdown lead.
Truss finishes the rally
Kolo Ngalo intercepted Henry on the first play of the fourth quarter and returned the ball to the end zone. A holding penalty erased the touchdown, but Mustang kept possession.
The Broncos needed only two offensive plays to capitalize. Delgado completed a pass to Lane Lewis, then Truss broke through for a touchdown run. The extra point made it 35-14 with 11:01 remaining, completing Mustang's run of 35 unanswered points.
Norman North responded when Henry found Mason on a wheel route for a long touchdown pass. The Timberwolves pulled within 35-21 with 9:12 to play.
Mustang answered with another drive behind Truss. A block-in-the-back penalty shortened one long run that had reached the end zone, but the Broncos retained a first down and kept moving. Truss broke free again for his second touchdown, restoring a three-score lead at 42-21.
After another fourth-down stop by the defense, Delgado helped move Mustang into scoring position with his running. He finished the possession with a fourth-and-goal touchdown pass to McCorvey, setting the final margin.
Norman North's apparent touchdown on the ensuing kickoff return was erased by offsetting penalties, requiring another kickoff. The Timberwolves did not score again.
Mustang finished with 489 yards of offense — 298 rushing and 191 passing — according to the broadcast's final-stat graphic. Delgado threw three touchdown passes, and the Broncos did not turn the ball over. Truss and Reyes were named players of the game.
