Mustang's early lead gave way to a 28-point Broken Arrow second quarter as the Broncos fell 35-10 on Thursday, Oct. 15, at Broken Arrow Memorial Stadium.
Harrison Daniels' field goal put Mustang ahead 3-0, but the Tigers scored four touchdowns before halftime and held the Broncos without an offensive touchdown. Tylen Duncan supplied Mustang's only touchdown with a fourth-quarter fumble return.
Mustang fell to 4-3 overall, while Broken Arrow improved to 7-0.
Broncos take an early lead
After the teams exchanged punts, Mustang put together a sustained drive behind Jayden Reyes and quarterback Kason Delgado. Delgado converted two fourth downs on keepers, and a completion to Gabriel Osborne Jr. helped move the Broncos into scoring position.
False-start penalties complicated the drive, but Mustang reached inside the 10 before stalling near the goal line. Daniels converted the short field goal, and the Broncos carried their 3-0 advantage into the second quarter.
Keywan Kearney helped protect that lead when he recovered a fumbled exchange as Broken Arrow threatened to score. Mustang could not turn the takeaway into points, but its defense forced another punt on the Tigers' next possession.
Broken Arrow strikes quickly
The game turned when Broken Arrow's quarterback broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run from an empty-backfield formation. The extra point missed, leaving the Tigers ahead 6-3.
A high snap disrupted Mustang's next possession. On fourth down, the punt struck a Bronco upback, leaving Broken Arrow a short field. The Tigers scored on their next offensive snap and completed a two-point conversion for a 14-3 lead with 2:42 left in the half.
An apparent Broken Arrow punt-return touchdown was erased by a facemask penalty against the Tigers, but the reprieve was brief. Broken Arrow scored on a long catch-and-run on the next play, extending the margin to 21-3 after the extra point.
A lost Mustang fumble gave the Tigers another opportunity. The Broncos forced three incompletions, but Broken Arrow converted fourth-and-10 with a touchdown pass down the sideline. The extra point made it 28-3 with 34 seconds remaining before halftime.
Three of the Tigers' four second-quarter touchdowns came on one-play possessions.
Duncan adds a late touchdown
Broken Arrow opened the second half with a touchdown drive from its own 20. A facemask penalty against Mustang extended the possession after an apparent third-down stop, and a rushing touchdown and extra point pushed the lead to 35-3.
The Broncos continued to struggle offensively. Brody Hagemann took over at quarterback in the third quarter, and freshman Ethan Truss helped move the chains on the ground, but Mustang could not produce a scoring drive.
Tate Homer's punting helped with field position. One third-quarter punt rolled inside the Broken Arrow 5, and Jonathan McCorvey downed another near the 7 late in the game.
Duncan then recovered a fumble near the Tiger goal line and returned it for a touchdown. The extra point completed the scoring with 3:21 remaining. Broken Arrow gained a first down on its final possession and ran out the clock.
Mustang finished with 106 total yards — 85 rushing on 36 attempts and 21 passing on four completions in 12 attempts. The Broncos had seven first downs and six penalties for 50 yards.
Senior defensive back Kolo Ngalo was named HTeaO player of the game.
Mustang next hosts Edmond Memorial at Bronco Stadium on Friday, with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
