Mustang rushed for 401 yards and scored all eight touchdowns on the ground in a 54-7 homecoming victory over Edmond North on Friday, Oct. 9, at Bronco Stadium.
Jayden Reyes led the Broncos with 20 carries for 166 yards and three touchdowns. Gabriel Osborne Jr., who was crowned homecoming king before kickoff, added two rushing touchdowns, starting with a field-reversing run on Mustang's first offensive play.
The Broncos built a 34-7 halftime lead and held the Huskies scoreless in the second half. Mustang improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in district play; Edmond North fell to 3-3 overall.
Osborne strikes early
Edmond North tried an onside kick to open the game, but Mustang recovered. Osborne took a toss on the next play, started left, cut back across the field and escaped several defenders on his way to the end zone. Harrison Daniels' extra point put Mustang ahead 7-0.
Tucker Harris' third-down sack helped stop the Huskies' first possession. A penalty forced Edmond North to punt again, and the short second kick gave Mustang the ball in Husky territory.
Reyes finished the ensuing drive with a rushing touchdown. A mishandled extra-point snap left the lead at 13-0, which remained the score at the end of the first quarter.
Osborne scored again on a reverse to open the second quarter. After the extra point made it 20-0, Tate Homer kicked and recovered an onside kick near midfield. Reyes followed with a long run to set up his second touchdown, extending the lead to 27-0 after the conversion.
Mustang answers the Huskies
Edmond North got on the board with a short shovel-pass touchdown in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 27-7.
Mustang responded with another touchdown drive despite a penalty that erased an apparent Osborne receiving score. Reyes helped sustain the possession on the ground and with a third-down catch, while Kason Delgado contributed a third-down keeper and a scramble to the goal line.
Hunter Huggins finished with a short touchdown run. Daniels' extra point made it 34-7.
The Huskies moved near the goal line again before halftime, but Benjamin Machado stopped a quarterback run, and Edmond North failed to score on its final passing attempts of the half.
Defense keeps control
A Delgado interception ended Mustang's first second-half possession, but the Broncos' defense prevented Edmond North from capitalizing.
Mustang forced a third-down incompletion under pressure, then stopped a fake punt to regain possession inside the Husky 15-yard line. Reyes scored on fourth down for his third rushing touchdown, and the extra point pushed the lead to 41-7.
The defense supplied another short field later in the third quarter when Keywan Kearney recovered a Husky fumble. Delgado finished that possession with a short touchdown run early in the fourth. The unsuccessful extra point left Mustang ahead 47-7.
The Broncos rotated additional players into the offense down the stretch. Dajuan Woody carried the final scoring drive, gaining yardage on consecutive runs before reaching the end zone. Homer's extra point completed the 54-7 score.
The broadcast's final statistics graphic credited Mustang with 459 total yards — 401 rushing and 58 passing — along with 20 first downs. The Broncos were penalized nine times for 82 yards. Reyes was selected as the broadcast's player of the game.
In his postgame interview, coach Lee Blankenship said Edmond North's extra coverage on Mustang's receivers had opened opportunities for the running game. He also credited the defense's containment and tackling against the Huskies' mobile quarterback.
Mustang next travels to Broken Arrow for a Thursday, Oct. 15 game, with a 7 p.m. kickoff, according to the broadcast.
