Mustang scored three first-quarter touchdowns and kept Norman off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter in a 44-6 win at Bronco Stadium on Friday, Sept. 11, bouncing back from its one-point loss to Yukon.
The Broncos improved to 2-1 in their home opener and finished their non-district schedule with a balanced offensive performance. Mustang rushed for 206 yards and passed for 179, while its defense held Norman to 153 total yards, according to the MHSBroncoSports.TV broadcast's final statistics.
Kason Delgado threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score. Gabriel Osborne Jr. caught two of those touchdown passes, and Tylen Duncan intercepted two Norman passes.
Mustang needed only 46 seconds to take the lead. Facing fourth-and-two on the opening possession, Delgado kept the ball and ran untouched into the end zone. Harrison Daniels' extra point made it 7-0.
Duncan intercepted Norman quarterback Joseph Kelley on the Tigers' first possession, setting up another quick scoring drive. Santos Archangel picked up a first down, then broke free on the next carry, spinning through a tackle and following an outside block from Obama Bell into the end zone. Mustang led 14-0 with 9:14 remaining in the first quarter.
A low punt snap on Norman's next possession gave the Broncos another short field. After a holding penalty pushed Mustang back, Delgado rolled left and found Osborne for a 17-yard touchdown. A failed two-point attempt left the lead at 20-0.
Daniels added a 29-yard field goal early in the second quarter. Near halftime, Bell fought through multiple defenders on a third-and-14 reception to keep another drive alive. Delgado then hit Osborne on a slant, and Osborne spun away from a defender for his second touchdown. Daniels' kick sent Mustang toward halftime with a 30-0 lead.
Freshman Ethan Truss scored his first varsity touchdown on a short run in the third quarter. On Mustang's next possession, Delgado connected with Isaac Woodard for another touchdown, extending the lead to 44-0 after the extra point.
Norman's only score came after the Tigers blocked a punt deep in Mustang territory. Chase Watson threw a touchdown pass to London Herbin with 7:34 left in the fourth quarter, but the Broncos blocked the extra point.
Duncan added his second interception late in the game when Kaiden Whited tipped a fourth-down pass. Mustang finished with the ball near Norman's goal line and let the remaining seconds expire.
The Tigers managed just 95 yards on 38 rushing attempts, about 2.5 yards per carry. The broadcast named the entire Mustang defense its player of the game. In his postgame interview, coach Lee Blankenship praised the unit's tackling and pass coverage, along with the offensive line's work in establishing the running game.
Mustang has a bye week before hosting Bixby to open district play.
