Mustang High School's marching band won the 2026 Yukon Marching Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Miller Stadium in Yukon, finishing first with a score of 80.50 and earning three additional awards.
Mustang led the 12-band finals field by 2.50 points over runner-up Westmoore, which scored 78.00. Canyon, Texas, finished third with 75.80.
In addition to the grand championship, Mustang received Outstanding Visual Performance, Outstanding General Effect and Fan Favorite. The fan award was determined by audience voting. Westmoore received Outstanding Music Performance, giving Mustang two of the three announced performance caption awards.
Beauty and the Rooster
Mustang's show, “Rooster Tales,” paired musicians in Mountie-style red tunics and tan hats with a color guard dressed as chickens. Rooster-patterned flags added splashes of color as the band moved through sweeping formations, playing the title song from “Beauty and the Beast.”
Cock-a-doodle-do calls and performers in oversized rooster costumes brought laughter from the stands during Mustang's afternoon performance. One rooster even got in on the music, trading solo lines with another musician.
